Located in scenic southeastern Indiana, Madison is a treasure waiting to be discovered.  Those with a fine eye for artistic and architectural appreciation, style and historic reverence will find it all in Madison.

Within two hours driving distance of Cincinnati, Louisville and Indianapolis, Madison is a perfect getaway for those looking to escape and enjoy the sites.  Located on the Ohio River Scenic Byway in southern Indiana, Madison is truly a quaint river town.

As Charles Kuralt wrote after a visit to Madison, “For me the princess of the rivers is unquestionably Madison, Indiana.  It is the most beautiful river town in America.  To walk through Madison’s leafy streets is to vow faithfulness to this regal lady forever.”

Outdoor Museum of Architecture
Madison's uniqueness stems from the history that surrounds it.  There are more than 133 blocks listed in the National Register of Historic Places, including the entire downtown area.  Madison’s downtown historic district recently received National Historic Landmark designation, joining such notables as Savannah and Charleston.

Madison's founders brought with them their own history, which is displayed in the architecture of the homes and buildings that make up this historic gem.  Travel America says, “Madison is an outdoor museum of architecture.”

The Lanier Mansion, Shrewsbury House and Eleutherian College are three National Historic Landmarks in the community.  There are also eight other historic museums, including a train depot, a restored frontier physician’s office, the home of a state supreme court judge credited with naming Indianapolis, and a restored saddletree factory.  You will delight in a stroll down tree-lined boulevards as you admire one of the finest collections of 19th-century architecture in America.
